Telekom Malaysia’s core migration success enables next-generation services
We've been so busy running after one deliverable after another. Guess all of us missed this one. Picked this out from www.mis-asia.com, and article written in July 2009. Almost a year ago... it's about us. Still remember those long-long nights staying up.

To those in IBIL that wants to recap those steps we took, the migration status dashboard, are still in the Internal Project Migration Workspace, our little internal migration newscast.

{ By AvantiKumar, 01 Jul 2009 }

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 JULY 2009 -- Following the successful roll out of its latest network core upgrade, next-generation services would be offered to Malaysians, according to communications provider Telekom Malaysia (TM).

"Customers will now benefit from the convenience and simplicity of having a common platform that can deliver a multitude of services, including the current available voice, Internet and data services such as TM Homeline, Streamyx, Metro-e, TM Direct, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)," said TM group chief executive officer Dato' Zamzamzairani. "The new IP (Internet protocol) core network also enhances interconnection between domestic and international networks, global application service providers, external applications, and between enterprises."

Zamzamzairani said the network migration was implemented in several phases and began with the Internet services. “As part of its network evolution plan, TM has successfully migrated its existing core network onto the latest network infrastructure in order to enable the company to build the transformation path towards next-generation networks and service delivery capabilities in the converging communications world.”

Future-proof platform

“The new core network provides a future-proof platform for TM to deliver a more integrated service proposition,” said Zamzamzairani. “It is capable of supporting large ecosystem of applications and more sophisticated voice, Internet and data services.”

“The convergence of multiple, parallel networks onto a single IP-based infrastructure will enable TM to provide multi class of service (CoS) capable of delivering end-to-end quality of service (QoS) and secure functionalities required to deliver innovative, value-added services to its customers,” he said.

"Our network strategy is always at the forefront of our business plans,” said Zamzamzairani. “Apart from this migration, we shall continue to look for ways to improve not only our network technologies but also to enhance our product mix and customer service capabilities. These continuous infrastructure investments are aimed at making us more competitive in the services that we offer across enterprise and consumer segments going forward.”

“This network migration is one of the key network development and investment projects for TM this year,” he said. “The deployment of this new core network is an important milestone in the history of communications industry as it marks a crucial step for TM in migrating its core network on an all-IP infrastructure.”

“In addition, the new IP core infrastructure will also set the foundation for TM to offer our high-speed broadband services in addition to the switched and access networks such as fibre-to-the-home (FTTH),” said Zamzamzairani. “This technology shift to the new core backbone will enable TM to leverage the increased functionality, customisation via the enhanced capabilities; reliability and scalability required for us to offer any-play services.”

TM defends decision to hire foreign firms for HSBB jobs
From Business Time 30th Oct 2009.

TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM) (4863) has come under fire for picking foreign firms as main contractors for its RM11.3 billion high speed broadband (HSBB) project but defended its decision as it needed high-technology capabilities that are not available in the country.

It was learnt that TM has awarded French firm Alcatel-Lucent as well as three Chinese companies, Huawei Technologies, ZTE Corp and Fiberhome Technologies Group to carry out the HSBB packages.

TM said the project also involves new and complex technologies and the equipment are not manufactured in Malaysia.

"To ensure that the project runs smoothly with minimum risks and the best procurement quality, it only makes sense for TM to conduct an open tender process to principal vendors," said TM's group chief executive officer Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa in a statement yesterday.
"This will also minimise business risk to our local companies while enabling them to gain technology transfer and upgrade their capabilities," he added.

He was responding to criticism by The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) that accused TM of sidestepping experienced local players.

But TM said as part of the tender criteria, the main contractors must have a local contractor as their partner.

The group said the tender process evaluation was strictly based on merit and capabilities.

As at September 30, TM had awarded HSBB-related contract work worth RM1.18 billion.

More than 200 local companies got jobs, led by the RM600 million contract for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Passive infrastructure awarded to local fibre-optic manufacturers.

TM said it is still finalising other HSBB packages and will announce them later.

Meanwhile, DPMM said it will write to the prime minister this week to formally complain about the matter.

Its president, Syed Ali Al-Attas, said TM's approach has always been to award local companies the main contract and foreign principals as equipment manufacturers only. Now, it is the other way around.

He claimed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was shocked when told about the matter yesterday.

The foreign firms are understood to be responsible for four HSBB packages and at the same time, five local companies will be sub-contracted for the various packages.

The HSBB packages include work for the Multi Service Access Network (MSAN), Synchronous Digital Hierarchy/Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (SDH/DWDM), Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Metro Ethernet (Metro-E).

Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent seem to have the biggest chunk, involving in three of the four HSBB packages.

Huawei and ZTE will carry out the MSAN network project; Alcatel-Lucent and Fiberhome the SDH/DWDM package; Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent the FTTH portion; and Huawei, ZTE and Alcatel-Lucent the Metro-E package.

The Malaysian partners, which are in talks with these principals on the scope of work for MSAN, are OPCOM Network Technologies Sdn Bhd (ONT) and Pernac Integrated Network Systems Sdn Bhd (PINS).

Airstar Sdn Bhd and PINS are the local partners for SDH/DWDM, ONT and Silver Ridge Sdn Bhd for FTTH and ONT, and Mesiniaga Bhd and Airstar for Metro-E.

TM plans service to enable Internet access on TV set

TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM), the country's dominant fixed-line phone company, plans to launch a service that allows customers to surf the Internet on a television set to grow its business.

"It is still at an early stage, but the plan is there. We will announce more details when we are closer to the launch," TM retail product vice-president Azizi A. Hadi said on the sidelines of the Frost & Sullivan Growth, Innovation and Leadership Congress 2009 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The government aims to boost high-speed Internet use to half of all homes by the end of next year. The penetration rate was 25 per cent at end-June this year.

Some industry players feel that the goal is too ambitious and challenging due to the low rate of personal computer (PC) ownership. Last year, just under half of households in the country owned a PC.

"If you are targeting PC users, it will be limited. However, if you are targeting households with TVs, then the market is much bigger," Azizi said.

Besides offering new services, TM will continue with its bundled programmes that combine PC and Streamyx service to attract new customers, he added.

Meanwhile, Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd product and services innovation senior vice-president Karan Henrik Ponnudurai called on industry players to join forces and create awareness of the benefits of broadband among rural folk.

"Currently, those who want broadband, especially in the urban areas, already have broadband. Now, it's about getting those in the rural areas to know about broadband and how to use it," said Karan, who was also at the congress.

Celcom has more than 420,000 mobile broadband users. It added 114,000 new users in the second quarter.
Broadband contributes Crisis to Snowball  Faster

Already we have two laws that described the speed of computer and internet. The most popular one is of course the Moore’s Law. Don’t forget we also have “Metcalfe’s Law,” – Quicker Access. It says that networks grow in value exponentially to every new user.

The biggest network in the world is still Internet. With the current although not so cheap Mobile Broadband available, users are now have ubiquitous access to web. The Internet will see the exodus arrival of two billion new users from the developing world, nearly tripling its size.

Soon if information provided in the internet world carries no responsibility , it shall be able to create panic to the society.

How does the speedier snowballing will take place? Social networking web will enable this to happen. Just imagine the Facebook and recently Twitter apps. These apps will surely create much information for everyone that have bit and pieces of information and put it in the internet to be shared with everyone. Not mentioning the very damaging negative Youtube video recorded by the users.

Imagine changes that used to take generations—economic cycles, cultural shifts, mass migrations, changes in the structures of societies and institutions—is now happening at the rapid rate that is infurl in a span of years. Since 2000, we have experienced three economic bubbles (dot-com, real estate, and credit) and three market crashes are basically an imminent crisis that will keep on happening, but this time at a faster rate.

What is very panicking is the current global influenza pandemic. It seems that this pandemic is well known to everyone in the globe and they have the latest information what is actually happening now. Worst, everyone knows there is no current available antidote for this but heard the price for the vaccine is very unaffordable to lots of people.

More disturbing is that there is not enough safeguards available in the internet world. Our computers can be shut-off remotely, virus can be easily spread, our credentials can be easily copied, firewalls protection is not good enough, etc.— When all this misfires or goes completely off the rails, we are in trouble.

Can this be controlled? Venture capitalist Bill Davidow has proposed the equivalent of online “surge protectors” to stop run-ups and panics on the Internet, the same way stock markets stop runaway trading. At the least we need better analytics to predict where change is taking us next.

However, Internet is best served to the population that subscribed living in a real core values. Only with these values as crisis accelerates, it will remain containable and avoid disaster impacting the society.
